Rotary in Mill Hill

Although Rotary is a large international organisation, each club develops close links with its local community. Most of the funds we raise are used to support local needs and the service that the members offer is to local residents.

How Do We Provide Service?

Members give a little of their spare time to help local projects and events and help to local groups and individuals. These include:

Providing Drivers for Barnet Mencap.
Barnet Mencap provide a special club in Mill Hill which, for many years, the Rotary Club of Mill Hill has provided drivers to transport the members in the evenings. By enabling the members to attend the club, there is an additional benefit of providing respite time for the parents.
Tea Dances. For many years we have hosted a tea dance for the benefit of many elderly people. It is interesting to see how such an event brings out the extrovert character of many of the guests and how well they know the dances.
Coach Tours. We have arranged coach tours for the elderly to see the Christmas Lights, driven round Docklands and, in the Summer, arranged trips into the country where tea was arranged in co-operation with the Rotary Club of Hitchin. Days Out for Children with Special Needs. Members have given time to take a party of mentally handicapped children to Woburn and arranged a party for a local special school at Broxbourne Zoo. In this case, a number of Rotary Clubs co-operated for the event and around 500 children took part.
Supporting Youth Organisations. One member is on the District Scout Council, another has a close association with a youth club in Grahame Park and yet another takes an active interest in the Barnet Youth Orchestra. We have a proud association with many youth organisations and are very please to support the development of youth interests. Rides on a Fun Train. In the Summer we provide a Fun Train to give rides to children in schools and local charities and at Christmastime we travel round the local streets collecting.

How Do We Provide Financial Support?

The Rotary Club of Mill Hill runs a number of events throughout the year to raise money for charities. Events include the Christmas Carol collection when we bring the Fun Train around the streets, visits to schools in the Summer with the Fun Train and International evenings to raise money for causes such as a Pain Clinic in India and other projects.

However, we aim to use around 80% of the donations made by the Rotary Club of Mill for local causes. These can range from

Individuals who have a particular need such as a motorised wheelchair or special medical equipment,

Youth organisations such as the scouts, many schools, the Barnet Schools Wind Orchestra and the Sea Cadets

Local charities including the Mayor of Barnet’s Appeal, local religious groups and various health organisations

Local Organisations including a local swimming pools and amateur dramatic societies.
